I’m Johnny Martyr, a photographer based in Frederick, Maryland.  My friend Eric Jones is a local actor who shares an interest in gothic style.

We decided to do a portrait session featuring him using b&w 35mm film.  Our concept was to create portraits that are simple, elegant and classic.

I wanted to concentrate on emotive facial expressions and angular compositions rather than leaning on gimmicky props and locations.  We wanted to get away from the sort of over-edited goth photos with equally over-the-top make-up and costumes.

The idea was just to get back to the roots of goth as we know it and I think we did that successfully here.
